Can you name America's first 13 colonies, the ones that signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776? They were New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
You probably know, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
But did you know that the Declaration of Independence starts off with: "When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."
And did you know that most of the Declaration was taken up with a list of the suffering endured by the colonists at the hands of the Kingdom of Great Britain?
Today is certainly not a day to be suffering. Look to your rights. Weight control is especially hard on a festive day with family and friends. Take some freedom for yourself. Take some liberties. Today is one of those days you are within your inalienable rights to say to yourself, "I'll go back on tomorrow." And when tomorrow comes, remember your pledge.
