If you are working on losing weight, it is important to concentrate on positive alternatives to overeating, or eating things that help keep you fat.
Working on alternative behaviors will help you cope with a variety of situations where you normally reach for food to do the job.
Some positive alternatives are:
- taking a moment to think before you overeat
- taking note of your emotions
- meditation and other forms of relaxation
- recognizing your personal needs
- enlisting support from trusted people
Engaging in some of these things may seem difficult at first, because you might be so used to overeating or eating fattening foods as a coping mechanism, and it might be hard to stop doing something that has become a part of you.
But over time, regular practice of these kinds of things can transform them into a "positive addiction". Something like stopping to check out how you are feeling - instead of indulging in compulsive eating - may be unpleasant in the short run, but will surely result in positive consequences in the long run.
