Whoa! Can’t go anywhere, can’t do anything without being influenced. The messages, the visuals are everywhere. Scary. Frightening. Terrifying. And we don’t even know we’re being influenced. How can an overweight person possibly resist?
Well—there’s only some truth to this being-influenced-by-our-environment stuff. Research shows that people are only influenced, even by subliminally presented messages and visuals, if what’s presented matches a need the person has and the person is in a “matching motivational state.”
In other words, don’t believe wholeheartedly in the bugaboo that food cues are all around, and we can’t do anything about being influenced by them. “How can an overweight person resist” is a cry of helplessness, not because the influences are so great, but because the overweight person has a need to eat too much food, and she is motivated to fill this need.
