Losing weight is a process where you replace old eating behavior with new eating behavior. If you think of it, these behavior changes always take place within a certain context.
Most likely, at first, the context for change is in your own home. The context might also be one in which you got rid of any foods, which would have tempted you into old eating behavior. Have you found too that it helps to confine your eating to mealtimes and even to the same eating space, the kitchen or the dining room, rather than the family room where not long ago you nibbled while you watched TV?
You can tell that context matters when the old weight-gaining behaviors come threatening when you eat out, go to a dinner party, or just go over to a friend’s house. The same might be true when you are not as vigilant about having tempting weight-gaining food in your pantry as you did a week or two ago or as alert when you loosen the restrictions on where you eat when you’re home.
Context is definitely a factor in behavior change. But there’s context and then there’s context. There are contexts like your kitchen and your pantry that are obviously tangible for you. But there are also powerful emotional contexts that are equally 'tangible.' These are contexts that you create or carry around with you, And there are those emotional contexts that others create and you have to deal with. Emotional contexts like their more obviously tangible cousins strongly influence the reappearance of old eating behaviors that interfere with the replacement of these old behaviors by new weight-losing ones?
So to be prepared is not to expect that just because you’re able to replace old behavior with new behavior in one context, you can replace old behavior with new behavior in all contexts. And remember too that context does not only mean an external setting like a room or a restaurant. Context also very definitely refers to your emotional states and the states of others, states like low self-esteem, disapproval, excessive worry, regret, envy, and many more.
